Google vs Apple →

Kara Swisher of All Things Digital:

Unfortunately, the continued verbal jousts at Apple (AAPL) by many Google (GOOG) execs - including CEO Eric Schmidt - onstage at the San Francisco developers conference got tired pretty quickly and soon felt petty and juvenile, and ultimately made Google look needlessly defensive.

It is interesting watching world beating CEOs having playground spats.

The best possible retort that Apple could make now is to not mention Google or anything to do with them during WWDC. That would probably hurt more than some over the top, carefully thought through response, no matter how subtle it is.

Note to Mr Jobs: Rise above the playground, ignore them completely.

Google expands its arsenal →

Google looks like it is gearing for a tactical assault on the internet telephony market, expanding its arsenal in a way that will allow it to go up against Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Apple’s iChat and the many others in this space. (Via Mr Carmo).

Google Chrome OS →

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. […] We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. […] It should just work.

At last, another operating system to challenge the status quo. I also salute the target of tech pragmatism.

This can only be good for the competition that is already out there. Challengers push existing players to new heights and the arrival of a challenger is in itself often enough to trigger a rash of innovations from everybody, not least the newcomer.

Exciting times.
